Avena Foods is a farmer owned, dedicated pure oat facility located in Regina, Saskatchewan. In 2007 Avena Foods became a pioneer as a supplier of premium certified oat ingredients to the food industry and manufacturer of the brand Only Oats to retail consumers.

People with celiac disease cannot tolerate a protein called gluten, found in wheat, rye, and barley. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that results in damage to the lining of the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients with continued exposure to gluten. At present there is no cure, but celiac disease is successfully treated by following the gluten-free diet for life. Until pure oats were made available, oats were prohibited because they were frequently contaminated with grains that contain gluten.

Avena Foods, which is primarily owned by a select group of farmers and pedigreed seed growers across Western Canada, has developed a line of pure uncontaminated oat products. Avena Foods’ facility and products are certified by Gluten Free Certification Organization (GFCO) to be free of cross contact from all other grains making them suitable for people with celiac disease, wheat allergies, gluten sensitivity and those on a low glycemic index diet. GFCO is the certifying body for US based Gluten Intolerance Group. Avena oats also carry Kosher certification through Orthodox Union.

Avena Foods has implemented rigorous standards and quality inspections which guarantee oat traceability and purity. Quality protocol begins with oats from specialized growers who follow a rigid set of guidelines for seeding, harvesting, cleaning, handling, sizing and delivering oats that meet Avena Foods’s premium standards. Once the oats have passed this initial rigorous testing, only then are they delivered to the dedicated pure oat processing plant. The pure oats are then processed in a controlled environment and lot tested for gluten using R5-ELISA technology, the industry recognized standard. Certification by GFCO to less than 10ppm of gluten significantly exceeds Health Canada’s gluten-free standard. This provides customers with complete confidence in the safety of our finished products.

Avena Foods offers the widest range of pure oat products in North America including quick flakes, rolled oats, steel cuts oats, flour, groats and bran.  This provides opportunities for pure oats to be used as an ingredient or consumer packaged product. Only Oats features a line of whole grain oat products and baking mixes.
